7 Day Tour of Bosnia and Herzegovina (special offer for groups)
7 Day Tour of Bosnia
*SPECIAL OFFER FOR GROUPS*
Day 1:
Arrival and free time
Arrive in Sarajevo, and check in to Haris Youth Hostel, or
your chosen accommodation.
Free time
About Sarajevo:
The capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sarajevo has a rich
and complex history. From its Ottoman origins, the city
became an industrial centre during the years of its Austro-
Hungarian occupation, and was the site of the assassination
of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914 (the catalyst for WWI).
As a part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia,
Sarajevo hosted the 1984 Winter Olympic Games, providing an
ideal location with its nearby mountains and skifields. As
Yugoslavia collapsed, this pillar of tolerance and multi-
ethnic harmony found itself under siege for almost four
years, enduring daily shelling and sniper attacks. The city
held out, and is today a vibrant and fascinating place, with
a friendly and safe atmosphere and a relaxed cafe culture.
Day 2:
Sarajevo City Tour
10:00 Depart HYH Tourist Agency
About HYH Sarajevo City Tour:
Fast becoming one of the best-known tours of the region, our
city tour will take you to some of
Sarajevo's most interesting sites. You will see: the Tunnel
Museum, the Olympic Bobsled track, a panoramic view of the
city, the Olympic Museum, Svrzo's House (a traditional
Bosnian House), Sniper Alley, the Latin Bridge
(assassination point of Archduke Ferdinand), City Hall,
Spite House and the Ottoman Old Town. Includes a traditional
Bosnian lunch.
16:00 Free time
Day 3:
Mostar, Počitelj and Vrelo Bune
7:00 Depart Sarajevo for Mostar
9:30 Arrive in Mostar. There will be an informal
walking tour of Mostar's sights, including its famous 'Stari
Most' (Old Bridge) over the Neretva River, and the UNESCO
heritage area around it.
About Mostar:
The biggest town in the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton, Mostar
was named for the Bridgekeepers (mostari) who guarded the
town's iconic Stari Most (built in Ottoman times), which
spans the Neretva River. Destroyed during the Yugoslav Wars,
Stari Most was consequently rebuilt in 2004 and now stands
as a reminder both of the city's endurance and of the high
cost of such conflicts. Traditionally, Mostar has always
been a cultural hub, and although it has two very distinct
entities (Catholic and Muslim), the town is in the process
of rebuilding itself. It has become a popular destination
for tourists eager to see the beautiful area around Stari
Most, and for backpackers who want to feel an ambitious new
generation remake their city in a spirit of tolerance and
goodwill.
13:00 Depart Mostar for Počitelj
13:30 Arrive in Počitelj. Visit the medieval
citadel, and the old walled town.
About Potičelj:
Dating back to the 14th Century, the town of Počitelj has
now been named by UNESCO's World Monuments Watch as one of
100 most endangered cultural heritage sites. Consisting of
both medieval and Ottoman architecture, Počitelj contains a
citadel, a hamam (Turkish bath), the mosque of Šišman
Ibrahim-Paša, a medresa, an inn, two clock towers and some
examples of historic Ottoman housing.
14:30 Depart Potičelj for Vrelo Bune
15:30 Arrive at Vrelo Bune for a traditional
Bosnian lunch, and a well-earned rest in beautiful natural
surroundings.
About Vrelo Bune:
This spring is the source of the short River Buna, which is
a tributary to the much larger Neretva River. It is known
for having the cleanest water in Bosnia, and forms part of a
natural and man-made complex which is on the UNESCO WHC
'Tentative List', as a site deserving preservation. On the
banks of the spring, and partially integrated with the cliff
faces around it, is the 'Blagaj Tekke' complex; a Sufi
monastery, including a guest house and mausoleum.
18:00 Depart Vrelo Bune for Sarajevo
Day 4:
Jajce and Travnik
9:00 Depart Sarajevo for Jajce
11:00 Arrive in Jajce, and visit the Old Town and
waterfalls.
About Jajce:
Built in the 15th Century, Jajce was, for a short time, the
capital of the Kingdom of Bosnia, before it fell to the
Ottoman Empire in 1463. Like Počitelj, Jajce has a
combination of different styles of architecture, from
medieval to Hungarian to Oriental, and is in the process of
being restored by UNESCO. The key features of Jajce are its
fortress (currently under renovation, but still accessible)
and its waterfall, where the rivers Pliva and Vrbas meet.
14:00 Depart Jajce for Travnik
15:00 Arrive in Travnik for lunch. After lunch,
visit the town of Travnik and Travnik Castle.
About Travnik:
Another example of mixed heritage, settlement in the Travnik
region can be traced back to the Bronze Age. Since then, the
Romans, Bosnians, Ottomans and Austro-Hungarians have all
staked their claims on the town, and evidence of each
culture remains. Because it largely avoided damage from
conflict during the Yugoslav Wars in the 1990s, much of
Travnik's Ottoman architecture has survived virtually
unchanged for 500 years. Highlights of Travnik are its
castle, its 15th century old town, and its proximity to
Mount Vlašić, one of Bosnia's highest peaks.
18:00 Depart Travnik for Sarajevo
Day 5:
Potočari and Srebrenica
9:00 Depart HYH for Potočari
12:30 Arrive at Potočari. Visit the former
UNPROFOR compound, Srebrenica Memorial Hall and Potočari
Memorial Centre.
About Srebrenica:
Taking its name from the silver mines previously found in
the area, Srebrenica was a quiet mountain town before the
events of the early to mid-90s shot it to international
prominence. Declared a safe area by the UN in 1993,
Srebrenica was one of three towns in Eastern Bosnia intended
as havens for persecuted Bošnjak civilians. Despite the
presence of the UNPROFOR, Srebrenica fell to the Army of
Republika Srpska in July 1995. Consequently, more than 8000
Muslim men and boys were massacred in the space of a few
days, while women, children and the elderly were evacuated
to nearby Tuzla. This systemic eradication has since been
declared genocide, and the UN's inaction in Srebrenica has
become a subject of contention in public and politcal
spheres. Opposite their former compound in Potočari is a
memorial centre staffed by survivors, where every year the
newly-identified remains of victims are buried on the
anniversary of the day Srebrenica fell.
15:00 Depart Potočari for lunch in Srebrenica
16:00 Depart Srebrenica for Sarajevo
Day 6:
Optional Day Trips and Activities
Choose from the following possible day trips:
Skakavac Waterfall
At a height of 92 metres, Skakavac is Bosnia's 'tallest'
waterfall. Although the volume of water is slight in
comparison, this makes it almost twice as high as Niagra
Falls. Set in beautiful countryside to the North-East of
Sarajevo, Skakavac is an ideal day trip for those who want
to leave the city behind. It requires a small amount of
walking to reach, through fields and forested areas, and
it's a good idea to take water for the journey and a warm
layer of clothing, as it is considerably cooler at the
waterfall itself. Picnic lunch included.
Igman and Bjelašnica Olympic Mountains
These mountains are part of the site of the 1984 Olympic
Winter Games, and some of the infrastructure still survives.
The ski jump and the medal podium can be found at Igman,
while Bjelašnica's slopes remain one of the prime
destinations for skiing and snowboarding in the region.
These mountains were fiercely-defended Bosnian territory
during the Yugoslav Wars, and there is still some evidence
of conflict in the area, including remnants of UN
occupation. Today, Igman and Bjelašnica are popular year-
round, with hikers and mountain bikers during the warmer
months, and with skiiers and snowboarders in the Winter.
Lukomir Mountain Village
At 1469m above sea-level, Lukomir is Bosnia's highest
mountain village. Although medieval farming practices are
continued here, most of the villagers are unable to live in
Lukomir during the Winter, as the roads become unpassable
and supplies can't reach them. However, during the warmer
months Lukomir is a showcase of Bosnian rural life. There
are no shops, but you can buy traditional wares (such as
cheeses and woollen socks) directly from the villagers who
made them. You also have spectacular views of the Rakitnica
Canyon and neigbouring Obalj and Visočica mountains from the
edge of the village.
Rafting on the Neretva River
If you want to see the Bosnian countryside from a different
angle, our rafting trip is ideal. You'll spend the whole day
on the beautiful Neretva River, about an hour from Sarajevo,
with some of Europe's most scenic views. Included are:
transfers, guides, breakfast, lunch, and rafting and safety
equipment.
