About Srebrenica and the Potočari Memorial Centre:
Taking its name from the silver mines previously found in
the area, Srebrenica was a quiet mountain town before the
events of the early to mid-90s shot it to international
prominence. Declared a safe area by the UN in 1993,
Srebrenica was one of three towns in Eastern Bosnia intended
as havens for persecuted Muslim civilians. Despite the
presence of the UNPROFOR, Srebrenica fell to the Army of
Republika Srpska in July 1995. Consequently, more than 8000
Muslim men and boys were massacred in the space of a few
days, while women, children and the elderly were evacuated
to nearby Tuzla. This systemic eradication has since been
declared genocide, and the UN's inaction in Srebrenica has
become a subject of contention in public and politcal
spheres. Opposite their former compound in Potočari is a
memorial centre staffed by survivors, where every year the
newly-identified remains of victims are buried on the
anniversary of the day Srebrenica fell.
